Becoming an au pair in the USA is more than just babysitting—it’s a unique blend of childcare, cultural exchange, and personal adventure. But what does a typical day actually look like?

In this blog, we’ll take you hour-by-hour through a real day in the life of an au pair living with an American host family in 2025.

7:00 AM – Wake Up & Morning Routine

The day usually starts early. After a quick breakfast, you help the kids:

  • Wake up and get dressed

  • Brush their teeth

  • Pack school bags and snacks

  • Walk or drive them to school or the bus stop

Pro tip: This is a great time to bond with the children—helping with little things like tying shoes or choosing outfits builds trust fast.

9:00 AM – Free Time & Self-Care

Once the kids are off to school, most au pairs get a few hours to themselves.

Use this time for:

  • Going back to sleep

  • Taking an English class

  • Going for a walk or working out

  • Chatting with family or friends back home

  • Exploring the area or grabbing coffee

You’re living in the U.S.—enjoy it!

3:00 PM – After School Pickup & Playtime

Once school ends, you either:

  • Pick the kids up directly

  • Meet them at the house

  • Start helping with their afternoon routine

This part of the day often includes:

  • Snack time

  • Playing games or doing crafts

  • Driving to after-school activities

  • Helping with homework

Tip: Be creative—kids love making paper animals, building with LEGO, or playing outdoor games.

6:00 PM – Dinner with the Family

Most au pairs eat dinner with their host family. It’s a great chance to:

  • Share your culture

  • Try American dishes

  • Practice your English in a relaxed way

  • Learn about the family’s traditions or schedule

Some families might ask you to help with simple meal prep or clean-up. Nothing too heavy—think teamwork!

7:30 PM – Bedtime Routine

Evening routines vary by family, but usually include:

  • Bath or shower time

  • Pajamas and brushing teeth

  • Reading bedtime stories

  • Lights out and hugs goodnight

After the kids go to bed, your official workday ends. Time to relax!

9:00 PM – Your Time Again

In the evening, you’re free to:

  • Watch Netflix

  • Study

  • Video chat with friends

  • Make plans for your weekend

  • Meet up with other au pairs nearby

Many au pairs build strong friendships in their community—and enjoy exploring together on weekends.

Real Talk: No Two Days Are the Same

Some days will be busy. Some will be chill. Sometimes the kids will be moody. Sometimes they’ll surprise you with handmade cards.

And sometimes you’ll pause and realize:

“I’m living in the USA. I’m part of a family. I’m growing every day.”

Being an au pair is about more than just a schedule. It’s about building relationships, learning a new culture, and discovering who you are.
