What is it really like to live, work, and travel in the U.S. for an entire summer?
To answer that, we talked to three Chinese university students who joined the Summer Work & Travel USA program. They didn’t just visit America—they became a part of it.
Here’s what they had to say.
Lili from Chengdu: “I Found My Confidence in the U.S.”
Job: Ride Operator at an amusement park in Wisconsin
English level before: Basic conversational
“I was nervous at first—what if no one understands me? But my co-workers were so kind. They taught me everything patiently, and soon I was operating the rides and making jokes with guests.
One day, a little girl gave me a high-five and said, ‘You’re my favorite!’ That moment changed me. I realized I can do more than I thought. I’m not shy anymore—I even joined an English club back in China!”
Takeaway: Confidence, improved English, and lifelong memories.
Jun from Xi’an: “I Worked Hard and Traveled Harder”
Job: Kitchen assistant in a seafood restaurant in Maine
English level before: Intermediate
“Work was tiring, especially during the dinner rush, but I saved nearly $4,000 in two months.
After the job, I went backpacking across the U.S.—New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, even the Grand Canyon. I booked hostels, trains, and flights by myself.
It was my first solo trip, and I learned so much about independence. Now I feel like I can go anywhere in the world.”
Takeaway: Travel experience, independence, and financial reward.
Wen from Beijing: “This Program Changed My Future Plans”
Job: Housekeeper in a hotel in South Carolina
English level before: Good, but not fluent
“I joined SWT just to try something different—but I ended up discovering my passion.
Talking to American guests every day made me want to study hospitality. My supervisor even wrote me a recommendation letter for graduate school.
I’m now applying for a master’s in the U.S. because this summer showed me what I want for my future.”
Takeaway: Career direction, international recommendation, and a new dream.
What Do They All Say?
Despite different jobs, backgrounds, and goals, all three students agree:
The program was challenging, but worth it
It helped them grow personally and professionally
They would recommend it to anyone ready for adventure
“It’s not just about money or travel. It’s about discovering who you are.”
