Every day, we receive a lot of inquiries about the requirements to work as an English teacher in China—many people are confused about academic qualifications, language certificates, work permits and other issues. Today, we will sort out all the core requirements in detail, making it easier for you to prepare and apply.

Basic Qualification Requirements for English Teachers in China

To work legally as an English teacher in China, foreigners must meet the basic qualification requirements, which are the premise of applying for a work visa and work permit. These requirements are standardized and long-term effective, and there is no random change.

Academic Qualification and Age Requirements:

The most basic requirement is a bachelor's degree or above from a formal university (recognized by the education department of the country of origin). In terms of age, generally, applicants should be between 18 and 60 years old, in good health, and able to adapt to the teaching work and living environment in China.

Language Ability Requirements:

Since it is an English teaching position, native English speakers are preferred (from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa). Non-native English speakers need to provide a valid TEFL/TESOL certificate (at least 120 hours) to prove their English teaching ability. Basic Chinese communication skills are a plus, but not a mandatory requirement.

Work Permit and Visa Requirements

Working legally in China requires going through formal procedures, and work permit and Z visa are indispensable. Many foreigners fail to work legally because they ignore these two key procedures, which may lead to unnecessary troubles.

Work Permit Application Conditions:

To apply for a work permit for foreign teachers, in addition to meeting the basic qualifications, you also need to provide a formal employment contract signed with a Chinese educational institution, a health certificate (issued by a designated medical institution), and no criminal record certificate (notarized and authenticated). The whole application process is standardized, and you can follow the official guidelines step by step.

Z Visa Application Guide:

After obtaining the work permit approval document, you need to apply for a Z visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country. After entering China, you need to go through the residence permit procedures within the specified time. It is strictly prohibited to work in China with a tourist visa or other types of visas, otherwise it will be regarded as illegal employment.
